I was born in Glencoe Village and brought up in Oban, Argyllshire.

Christina, my wife, and I enjoyed travelling throughout Scotland to attend Dances.

When we started coming down to Helensburgh for the Highland Association dances, we were both made very welcome by all, particularly Jeanette & Jack Inglis.

We became members and have continued attending regularly which has been made easier since we moved to Clynder five years ago as our Daughters now live in Helensburgh.The association has a great reputation for welcoming new members 

          and I will do my best to preside over this tradition.

I was born in Aberdeen but brought up in Glasgow. I moved to Helensburgh in 1983 to start my own business. I have always been interested in dancing and joined the H&DHA over twenty years ago. As President it's a daunting thought to take on the responsibility of an Association that is 107 years old but I will endeavour to continue the good work of previous Presidents.

I have been a member of the Helensburgh and District Highland Association since the early1980’s

First stumbling on the association in the Ardencaple Hotel,as  the H.D.H.A. were temporarily out of the Commodore due to fire damage in the hotel, 

Susan & I were warmly welcomed into the association by the then President Katie McDonald, and Jimmy and Flora Best of Cardross.

 I intend to work hard to keep up the high standard of entertainment and extend a warm welcome to as many new & old friends as possible. 

I have always loved Ceilidh music and dance, it was part of my growing up in Donegal, I can remember very clearly when The legendary “Jimmy Shand” hit the top with the “Blue Bell Polka”.

Part of my duties are to book the bands for future Ceilidh’s and Dances and I have some of the best on the circuit booked for  Helensburgh 2012-13, and will continually source such bands for the future.

Introducing our new Association President, Jim Gray, taking over from Alex Wright, May 2011 

 Born and grew up in Minard, Argyll where Ceilidh dancing was the norm before Irish Show bands and Disco music trampled all over the Scottish Dance Bands.

I have Lived in Helensburgh since 1965 and been a member of the Highland Association since the mid 1980`s (after the children stopped needing babysitters!).  I feel it is important that we retain our musical heritage and will do all I can to promote this. 

 

Unfortunately, due to family circumstances, Jim has had to stand down from his position as president of the association. We are very sorry indeed to lose his services. 

A new president is expected to be elected at the AGM on the 25th May 2012.

 Alex, originally from Dumbarton, but having lived in the Alexandria area since the late 70's, succeeded our previous president, John Wilson in May 2008, and served as president of the Association until May 2011. Alex now continues as a Director on the Committee.

                            

 

As you can see below, he is keen to portray more than one image to his public!
